Every deck we frame gets joist hangers rated for the load, not just nailed on and hoped for. We flash the ledger board where it meets the house so water can't get behind it and rot the wall framing. Composite or wood, we leave the right gap between boards for expansion, so the deck doesn't buckle in August heat. That's the difference between a deck that looks good at the walkthrough and one that's still tight five summers later.
